I'm just finishing Gibbon's Decline and Fall and am finally including her here as a writer who must be read to understand how disenfranchised women are from power systems embedded in our patriarchal society. Less dystopian than Margaret Atwood, Tepper offers perspective on the world we think we know and asks us to question not onlynhow we got here but where we go from here.
Some quotes:
(Keeping in mind the novel was published in 1996.)
"We've taken over the KKK, and the Ameri an Nazi party, but they're only pocket chanve. We now own the Republican party. Any moderates still hiding in there have been flushed out. We've been managing the press for over 20 years now, and the public is accustomed to our view of the world. ...
People don't want to absorb new information. They like predictability.
...And then, of course, people are sick of issues. Civil rights, human rights, women's rights--people are tired of all that." (p52)
"Politics has nothing to do with reality." (p269)
"The battle that's coming...is between balance and dominion." (p322)
"...there is hope in 2 women, help in 3 women, strength in 4, joy in 5, power in 6, and against 7, no gate may stand."
...The battle coming that was coming...has nothing to do with gender but with dominion. "(p328)
