Kate Atkinson LIFE AFTER LIFE

Fascinating application of time sequencing. The protagonist is born, lives and dies in what can best be thought of in terms of multiple realities. As the plot lines move our heroine forward on one fork, the road twists and turns and ends in quite another fork. Suspense builds concomitantly with the relief we have knowing there will be another avenue for her to explore, another version of her life to live out, however briefly.

Set in England post WW1, continuing through WW2, the war supports the random relationship we all have with death, our constant companion, and our forever subconscious knowing that our paths ultimately converge.
